Why We Use Dc Instead Of Ac

Why we use dc instead of ac

Direct current is used in any electronic device with a battery for a power source. It is also used to charge batteries, so rechargeable devices like laptops and cell phones come with an AC adapter that converts alternating current to direct current.

Why do we not use DC?

First of all, DC is difficult to generate because primarily it is generated by batteries and electrochemical of photovoltaic cells. Power loss during transmission is more in direct current as compared to alternating current. For the same value of voltage DC is more dangerous than AC.

What happens if you use DC instead of AC?

Some devices needs only peak value of AC which is 40% higher than the RMS value of AC. If operated with high DC voltage, the operation may be acceptable. Overall, if DC applied to the AC rated devices, some may burns, start to smoke, work partially or not at all according to the designs and operations.

Which is safer DC or AC?

Alternating current (A.C) is five times more dangerous than Direct current (D.C). The frequency of the alternating current is the main reason for this severe effect on the human body. The frequency of 60 cycles is in an extremely harmful range. At this frequency, even a small voltage of 25 volts can kill a person.

Why do we need DC voltage?

DC is used as low voltage , as most of modern electronics operate at vey low voltages and in some case batteries in small sizes can support the sensors for years like gas and fire detectors. Many places you can not run wires for Ac, Dc is the best solution.

Which is more useful AC or DC?

Why is the use of AC voltage preferred over DC voltage? There are two reasons why the use of AC voltage is preferred over DC voltage: The loss of energy during the transmission in AC voltage is less when compared with the DC voltage and this makes its installations easy when the transformers are at distance.

Why is DC better for long distances?

“If the transmission line route is longer than about 300 miles, DC is a better option because AC lines have more line losses than DC for bulk power transfer.”

Why do cars use DC current?

When batteries discharge they emit a constant DC power in one direction, supplying electricity through the positive terminal to the negative. Most automotive components require this DC charge to work properly, but it is limited because batteries will eventually discharge completely, with no remaining power to give.

Why DC is used in trains?

DC motors are used on trains is because of their high torque and good speed control. Compared to AC motors, DC motors can provide industry applications with a fine balance of strong starting torque and controllable speed for seamless yet precise performance.

Why DC current is not shocked?

The reason being, at 50 and 60 Hz, the electrical pulses from the shock stimulate the body's muscles and interfere with our own nervous system. So basically, DC current is required more to cause the same effect as AC.

Is DC hotter than AC?

No, because 120V RMS is the AC voltage that produces the same heat as 120 VDC. Theoretically it should be no difference at all.

Why is DC voltage zero?

A DC voltage source always has a constant DC voltage across it, and hence a zero AC voltage. Consider an AC voltage source and a DC source connected by a resistor. The AC voltage across the AC source will be as specified. The AC voltage across the DC source will be zero.

Where is DC power used?

DC power is widely used in low voltage applications such as charging batteries, automotive applications, aircraft applications and other low voltage, low current applications. All solar panels nowadays produce DC power.

Why is DC voltage higher than AC?

Because the peak voltage of a sine wave is not the same as the RMS (Root Mean Squared, or effective) voltage. The ratio between peak and RMS values is the square root of 2 for a pure sine wave.

Why power loss is less in AC?

With ac the swing in the voltage is much higher than the dc voltage carting the same amount of power. So a 1MV rms ac power line has a voltage swing of ±1.4MV and so with an ac power line the insulation has be able to withstand voltages which are 1.4 times than dc power lines.

Can DC current shock you?

12 volts DC is not a shock hazard. You can't touch the wires in your 120V AC household electrical system without getting a nasty, dangerous shock, but you can touch bare wires carrying 12V DC in your car, even lay your hands across the positive and negative 12V battery terminals, without risk of electrocution.

Why AC is cheaper than DC?

It is better to have lower current and higher voltage to reduce losses. AC is much easier (therefore cheaper) to step up and down in voltage(using a transformer) than DC, and can be done more efficiently than the much more expensive and complex DC step-up/step-down systems.

Is there voltage drop in DC?

In a DC circuit, voltage equals current multiplied by resistance. V = I R. Also, Kirchhoff's circuit laws state that in any DC circuit, the sum of the voltage drops across each component of the circuit is equal to the supply voltage.

Why is DC high voltage efficient?

HVDC is more efficient to transmit over long distances The reason why high-voltage DC has less energy losses over transmission lines is because high-voltage AC has much more "capacitive" losses than DC power, especially when conductors are closer to the ground.

Are houses AC or DC?

When you plug things into the outlet in your house, you don't get DC. Household outlets are AC - Alternating Current. This current has a frequency of 60 Hz and would look something like this (if you plotted current as a function of time).
